• Does the sight of a dog fill you with fear?
• Do you feel anxious when you think about being near to a dog?
• Do you tend to avoid situations because of dogs?
• Does your heart rate increase rapidly at the thought of being near a dog?
If you have answered yes to one or more of the above like many of the people that come to us for help you probably have a Dog Phobia.
Good news Dog phobias are a common problem that is treatable
A phobia of dogs may sound silly to anyone you hasn't had one but anyone who has suffered from a dog phobia will tell you that it can have a huge effect on your life. Although many people love dogs a person with a phobia of dogs will often suffer a fear or phobic response that can range from mild discomfort to distress all the way through to sheer panic. And with so many people owning dogs trying to avoid dogs can be difficult at times especially if you have small children that want to go to a park.

Dog Phobias are a learnt response
It is true that people are born with only 2 fears - falling and loud noises -and all the others are learnt. The good news is that because your phobia is a learnt response a new response can be learnt to stop your phobia. Your dog phobia may have originated from an unpleasant experience with a dog or seeing someone else have an unpleasant experience with a dog. Some people have even heard or read a report of a dog attacking someone and then imagined it happening to them which has lead to a phobia of dogs. Other people have learnt to have a dog phobia as a small child by watching a friend or relative who had a dog phobia. I do get asked by people to help them to stop their dog phobia because they are scared that their child will copy them and develop a phobia of dogs by watching their parent being scared by dogs and this has been known to happen. You can overcome your Dog Phobia!
