While it's a normal response to dislike being sick & most people find the sight or smell of it revolting, if you suffer with one or more of the above symptoms you probably have Emetophobia.

However there is good news, with effective treatment the majority of people really can make significant improvements or completely overcome fear of vomiting. Read on and discover how we can help you.

What is Emetophobia?

Emetophobia - Fear of vomiting is a learnt behavioral response. .

Obviously no one likes the idea of being sick however as an Emetophobic you'll have experienced a much stronger response that can range from fear to terror & possibly even panic.

Emetophobia is a condition that commonly goes unreported because sadly many sufferers are too embarrassed to talk about their fear. The condition is often misunderstood by many people including some therapists & doctors.

Emetophobia is actually a surprisingly common condition with millions of sufferers worldwide. The International Emetophobia Society reports it as being the 5th most common phobia.

What causes Emetophobia?

Like many Emetophobics your fear may have started in early childhood although it can also develop in teenage years or as an adult.

The fear can start due to being sick yourself & not understanding what is happening. For many people the feelings experienced during being sick for the first time can be very scary. Or you may have learnt it by seeing someone else being sick & watching their reactions.

It can also be caused by seeing somebody in a state of panic about vomit. The fear is then perpetuated because the learnt protective response you experience is an extreme need to avoid all similar situations.

The problem many Emetophobics face

emetophobia cure

If you were afraid of flying or spiders you could probably avoid flying or spiders. And while you do your best to avoid situations where you might catch a bug or where someone might be sick one of the biggest problems many Emetophobics face is that you can't run away from your own feelings.

As an Emetophobic you understandably do your best to avoid being sick yourself. If you hear that there is a bug going around you possibly eat less or not eat on the basis that if there is nothing in your stomach it reduces your chances of being sick. The problem is that you then get hunger pains & that churning feeling in your stomach is often mistakenly seen as a sign that you may be sick which can send you spiraling into anxiety.

Feelings of anxiety can cause a churning feeling in your stomach or guts which again you may have experienced and understandably thought it meant you were going to be sick and that then lead to even higher levels of anxiety. You are then experiencing what we call "The Anxiety Loop".

What our patients say - Emetophobia & Fear of vomiting testimonial

Hi Paul,

I don’t know if you remember me. I came to see you last year about my Emetophobia. I thought I would send you an email to let you know how I’m getting on.

Well there have definitely been improvements!! I went on holiday and you will be happy to know that I didn’t take an anti sickness pill to travel and nor did I take one for the entire holiday!!! A few days before I left I listened to the CD you gave me of our recording and that put things in to perspective and I actually enjoyed the traveling and was calm!!!

I have also started my driving lessons again (I started them in June) I was so worried about starting again due to the accident so I applied what you taught me and also overcame this fear too. You’ll be happy to know the lessons are going well and I have my confidence again.

When I went to do my theory I started getting that nauseous feeling-panic set in-there was no bin…thoughts crossed my head… what if I have to throw up…where's the loo…then I practiced what u taught me (thank god I was in a cubicle otherwise I would have gotten funny looks shutting my eyes and breathing) and slowly I started to distract myself with the actual test and was fine! I passed with high marks 1st time.

Also for the 1st time in about 12 years I went to McDonalds and ordered a McChicken sandwich!!! I normally just stick to a normal hamburger – easier to dissect!! Also I have on few occasions ordered chicken nuggets as well-I still cut them in half-I will always be wary but I no longer worry about eating them! I’m eating more meat when I’m out and no longer sticking to vegetarian options to be on “the safe side”.

I even enjoy the odd alcoholic drink now but not to the drunk stage though-I don’t think I’ll ever be at the stage where I want to be drunk or to feel ill after drinking.

I am also off my anti-depressants!

In January me and mum went to the 02 Arena to watch Strictly Come Dancing Live Tour with front row seats….the 02 Arena is somewhere I had always avoided going to but I thoroughly enjoyed myself and didn’t feel sick once!

Anyway, sorry to have rambled on. I just wanted to let you know how I have been doing and to say, a very big THANK YOU! *
